VNA Truck Safety

1. VNA needs specialist training
Very narrow aisle trucks and guidance systems require specialist training. Operate only the equipment and aisle system for which you are authorised, and know the site's access-control procedure.

2. Check before use
Before operating, complete and record the pre-shift checklist. Inspect the mast, forks, operator platform, gates, restraints, controls and emergency systems in line with the manufacturer's instructions. Isolate and report an unsafe truck.

3. Check the guidance system
Check the aisle guidance rails, wire or navigation system as required by the site procedure. Do not enter the aisle if guidance, interlocks or warning systems are faulty.

4. Secure the aisle
Before entering, make sure the aisle is clear and controlled. Use the barriers, lights, interlocks or communication system provided. Where site procedure requires it, use several short, sharp horn bursts before a blind aisle entry.

5. Enter and travel correctly
Align with the guidance system before entering the aisle. Travel at the approved speed and keep hands, arms and all parts of the truck within the protected operating envelope.

6. Know four facts before lifting
Before lifting, confirm the load weight, its load centre, the required lift height, and that the capacity plate confirms this truck can safely handle the load under those conditions.

7. Check capacity at height
Read the capacity plate for the actual height, load centre and attachment. Available capacity can reduce at height, so never estimate or exceed the stated limit.

8. Check the load and location
Check the pallet is sound, the load is stable and the forks support it correctly. Confirm the racking location and surrounding clearance are suitable before placing or retrieving the load.

9. Keep a clear view
Maintain a clear view using the truck's cameras or visibility aids as trained. If vision is blocked, stop and use the approved safe method. Use a trained banksman only where the site and aisle-control procedure permits it.

10. Protect pedestrians
Pedestrians must not enter an active VNA operating aisle. Use the warning, barrier and communication systems provided, and stop immediately if anyone enters the controlled zone.

11. Protect truck stability
Follow the approved travel and turning limits for the guidance system. At height, use slow, controlled hydraulic movements and stop if the load, pallet or racking becomes unstable.

12. Work safely at height
At height, use every gate, restraint and protective system exactly as trained. Never climb on the racking or reach outside the platform. Make slow, controlled load movements.

13. Stack in a controlled sequence
Align with the correct location and stop as required by the operating system. Place or retrieve the load using small, controlled movements, and confirm the pallet is supported before withdrawing the forks.

14. Know the emergency plan
Know the site's emergency lowering, communication and rescue procedures before working at height. If the truck stops or guidance fails, secure the area and never improvise a recovery.

15. Park and isolate correctly
Park only in the authorised place. Lower the platform and forks in accordance with the manufacturer's procedure, secure the controls, switch off and control the key or access device.

16. Stop if the system is unsafe
Stop if guidance, aisle control, the load, racking or emergency arrangements are unsafe. These reminders support learning, but practical instruction and assessment remain essential.
